Seven45 Studios talks Power Gig details, we go hands-on with its six string guitar peripheral

Really not a bad idea.
We'll just come right out and say it: Guitar Hero and Rock Band should watch their back, 'cause there's a better-than-decent chance that Power Gig will be all the rage this holiday season. Seven45 Studios is a heretofore unheard of upstart with roots in First Act, and unlike the vast majority of game developers, these guys actually have a direct hand in the production of the software and hardware associated with this package. They'll be designing the Power Gig video game series (Rise of the SixString is only the first installment) as well as the guitars, drums and microphones in-house, and given the First Act roots, you know you'll be getting instruments of higher quality than what's on the market today. Oh, and yes, we didn't misspeak when we pluralized "guitars" and mentioned those other two devices.

We had a sit down with the team today at GDC, and besides coming away impressed with the alpha build of the game and the prototype axes we saw, we also learned quite a bit more about their plans than what was revealed in this morning's press release. Just to be exceptionally clear, Seven45 Studios will not only sell their upcoming title as a standalone product, but it will sell a "band bundle" that includes the game, a guitar (plus a strap, picks and an extra set of strings), a drum set and a microphone, the latter two of which are still very early in production and weren't available for us to test. The beat matching setup that gamers have grown used to in Rock Band and Guitar Hero is still there, but most everything else is new; a "chording" addition will allow users to strum actual power chords that match the chords used in the song, giving newbies the ability to actually learn songs as they play the game. In other words, if users strum the same chords required to succeed in the game but through an amp, they'll be playing the actual song. Speaking of which, the bundled guitar (along with extra guitars that are still being sorted in terms of size, material and color) doubles as a legitimate six string by simply depressing the dampening pad beneath the neck, and while it won't match the crisp tone emitted from your Les Paul Custom, the prototype we heard here in San Francisco sounded just fine for a beginner's instrument. We also learned that existing Rock Band and Guitar Hero guitars will work with the Power Gig titles, and Seven45's guitars will work with existing music band games -- not bad!

More after the break...

What Kind Of Damage Would An Underwear Bomb Actually Do To A Flying 747 Jetliner?
Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 7:50 pm

Shared by Rudeboy
Good to know
Remember the jackass that tried exploding his little terrorist genitals onboard Northwest Flight 253 over Christmas? Well the BBC set out to investigate exactly what kind of damage a crotchful of PETN could actually do to a flying jetliner.
The BBC did a test on an old decomissioned 747, putting a dummy with the same type and amount of explosives found on the underwear bomber. As you can see in the above video, the flexibility of the outside of the frame allowed it to absorb the blast. If the bomb had gone off, the plane would have still been able to fly and land.Of course, the damage inside the plane still would have been horrific. But it's nice to know that the trusty 747 can stand up to such abuse.
Oh man, had I been on that plane I would have put the hurt on that guy. I'm talking "make you wish pterodactyls had never invented flight in the first place" kind of hurt. I'm talking Prehistoric Hurt Locker. Oscar-winning tie-in FTW! Goldguy me, bitches.Boeing 747 Survives a Simulated Underwear Bomb Blast [gizmodo] (with more info on why the test was legit despite the cabin not being pressurized)Thanks to Suzanne and Archibold, for having two normal names for once. StreetFire checks out the Icon FJ 4x4 - Click above to view the video after the jump

The vintage FJ Landcruiser tuners at Icon turn out highly detailed 4x4s with custom-designed suspensions comprised of top-shelf parts, powdercoated exteriors and German military convertible tops. We've sampled the firm's wares before and those details turn Icon vehicles into impressive - if spendy - SUVs: $79,000 gets you a look at the bottom of the barrel, more than $100,000 is needed for a taste of the cream. Are they worth it? StreetFire takes a look at three Icons, and along with our own Johnny Liberman and PickupTrucks.com's Mike Levine, renders the muddy verdict. Follow the jump for all the action.

Spectrum Analyzer showcases HTML5 Audio's potential
Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 4:00 pm

HTML5

You know those IQ test questions, "An apple is to an orange as a ________ is to a wall"? Well, HTML5 is to HTML4 as a photon torpedo is to a snowball hurled by a sleepy five-year old. Or something. If that sounds jumbled, it's just because HTML5 is challenging my notion of what HTML even is and that's making me very confused.

The HTML5 Audio Data API is just one example of what can be done with HTML5. It's an audio visualization, done completely in HTML5. It's so bleeding-edge I wasn't even able to view it properly -- you need patched versions of Firefox 3.7 alpha for it to render. I did watch the Youtube video (after the break), and once you get past the mind-numbing music and realize you're not watching Flash, it's actually kind of cool.

I just hope that when HTML5 finally catches on I'll be able to figure it out well enough to stay relevant. Feeling old here!

Synergy+ shares one mouse and keyboard between multiple computers
Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 2:00 pm

Synergy+

Synergy is a cross-platform, open source application that allows you to navigate between multiple computer systems using a single mouse. Each system has its own screen, and once Synergy is installed and configured correctly, you can simply move your mouse to the edge of one screen and watch it seamlessly jump to another screen, which is a completely different computer.

We've talked about Synergy before, but unfortunately, development on it stagnated in 2006. Thankfully, there is a project on Google Code called Synergy+ which has taken the source code of the original Synergy, written by Chris Schoeneman, and updated it with numerous bug fixes. The team behind Synergy+ seems to want to continue improving the product, and they would welcome Schoeneman back, even to the extent of hoping that he would merge the two projects if he ever returned to active development on Synergy.

133 Photos Lit By a Single Candle [Photography]

Actually pretty cool. Plus props to the XD.

For this week's Shooting Challenge, I asked you to capture a photography by the light of just one candle. Your response, as always, was remarkable.

Most Meme

"Taken with a tripod mounted Canon XSi with a Canon 50mm f1.8 and an extension tube. Exposure was f/2 @ 1/50s, ISO 320."
[Ed note: Close call, given the Portal shot in the galleries.]
-Adam Carlson

Most Clever

"This was "shot" using my Canon 7D with the 50mm f1.8 prime. Tripod, ISO 800, 1/6 shutter, f2.8. The only light in the image is from a taper candle inserted into a disassembled MAG-Lite. To keep the flame from melting the reflective lens of the flashlight, the setup was aimed up and the final image rotated."
-Christian Shaffer

Most Fiery

"The shot was taken with my Canon S90 @ F8, ISO 400 and with a 15sec exposure on a tripod. To achieve the blur, I adjusted the head of the tripod downward and back to it's starting position quickly at the start of the exposure."
-Jesse Oliveri

"I hung the statue upside down to make it appear that the light was coming from up above. Using long term exposure I quickly moved the candle to light the side of his face."
[Ed note: This image subverted my expectations completely, re-imagining soft candle light as a crisp backlight. Also, I have a soft spot for The Incredibles, silhouettes and the color red.]
-Felix Mendoza

Note: there are two galleries this week for the sake of our back end:

If participants proved one thing this week, it's that a single candle is more than apt for photography by modern dSLRS. Well, that, and they're all gluttons for punishment. Nice job, everyone.

Now cheer* on your favorites in the comments!

(*Just be sure to do so without, you know, being a dick to other participants. Also, for anyone wondering why the lead shot didn't win, it was taken last summer making it ineligible for competition.)

Ubisoft's DRM servers fail, while gamers say "We told you so!"
Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 1:42 pm

stupid Ubisoft. It just makes legit game owners want to hack their games.

Gamers almost universally groaned when Ubisoft announced a new DRM scheme that requires its latest games, including Assassin's Creed 2 and SIlent Hunter 5, to be connected to the Ubisoft servers to function. Everyone wondered, "What happens when the servers fail?" Well, we found out over the weekend, when -- surprise! -- the servers temporarily went down, rendering legitimately-purchased copies of Ubisoft's latest games temporarily unplayable.

Ubisoft's initial excuse was that their games are too popular, and the overwhelming server loads apparently caused the downtime. Today, they reversed course and admitted that a DDoS attack had taken down the servers. Despite the fact that such an attack could happen again at any time, locking legitimate customers out, Ubi is sticking to its guns on the new DRM scheme for now. I hope that they take steps to secure their servers against another DDoS attack in the short term, and make a long term plan to drop this crazy DRM scheme altogether.

Add volume and battery meters (and more!) to your Windows 7 superbar
Monday, 8 March 2010, 4:00 pm

We've covered a few Windows 7 friendly status indicators before -- like these two for monitoring your CPU and memory utilization. Another developer decided to have a go at his own version, and the results are pretty slick.

Five meters are available: power, volume, disk, CPU, and memory. The meters are very configurable, with options for custom colors, overlays, and whether or not to launch them at startup. Each one uses about 6MB of memory and no install is required -- just drop the .exe files somewhere on your hard drive and fire 'em up.

While I'm not one to keep a constant eye on things like CPU, ram, and diskspace (my Spider Sense usually kicks in when there's a problem on one of those fronts), the volume and battery indicators are handy. I especially like the nice, obvious mute indicator -- which leaves no doubt as to whether or not unwanted system sounds are going to disturb anyone nearby.

You can download the superbar meters from the developer's website.

I Really Think/Hope Keanu Reeves Is Joking About New 'Bill & Ted' Movie
Monday, 8 March 2010, 3:34 pm

bill-ted-excellent-adventure.jpgNot that I don't enjoy my [faint memory of] the Bill & Ted movies (I seem to recall Napoleon eating ice cream, George Carlin, and an extended parody of The Seventh Seal); I'm just pretty sure another one would be really, really shitty--and placing those characters in 2010 reaches nearly Austin Powers levels of ridiculous anachronism. Also, I'm pretty sure Keanu Reeves was joking when he told MTV he's not joking about trying to put together a Bill & Ted sequel. That said, here's Ted being pestered into saying he's trying to make another Bill & Ted movie: That's a Keanu joke, right? I think it just comes off weird from a mix of being rightfully annoyed at being asked to greenlight a Bill & Ted movie on the red carpet and being nervous about having to read aloud later.

Microsoft to release cross-platform games on Windows, Windows Phone 7, and Xbox
Sunday, 7 March 2010, 10:30 am

Holy synchronicity, Batman! Microsoft is preparing to offer games that can be played across Windows, WIndows Phone AND Xbox. That's right: one game, three systems. It doesn't matter that the input method for each platform is different; you'll be able to play these games by keyboard, controller, or accelerometer. My little gamer heart just grew three sizes!

Even cooler, your game data will sync amongst your collection of MS devices, allowing you to save a game on your desktop machine or Xbox and then take it on the road using your Windows Phone. Our sister site, Engadget, reported on Microsoft's demo of one of these new cross-platform games, saying it was developed in Visual Studio, and the three versions of the game share 90% identical code.

Any company competing against Microsoft and Xbox Live in the casual gaming arena is quaking in its boots right about now ...

Check out the demo video after the jump.
